I took Larry's post to mean that to ensure image quality is retained excessive cropping is to be avoided, it is not always possible due to the circumstances of location, the equipment available etc. I did not take it to be an elitist approach as some have suggested, I am all for exploring all options but whenever possible I try to make the best use of the frame to give me the best chance of producing a quality large print.

I too took his post to mean the same as you've interpreted. I take exception to that concept. I don't think he's an elitist - although, as you say, some may have interpreted his words that way. I just think he's dead wrong and influenced too much by his slide-shooting background. Anyone who's ever worked in a wet darkroom (yours truly) knows that cropping - even occasionally in the extreme - is a completely essential part of the process.

The last part of what you said, says it all.

Absolutely. In the darkroom even with slide film, we'd print with reversal paper or Cibachrome and crop as needed. If it was a real keeper, we'd make a 6x7 or 4x5 internegative from it and again, do the edits as needed including whatever crop we wanted.

Slide film is just a positive film as opposed to a negative film and can be treated the same way. I rarely if ever actually made a slide from it. I never even bought a Kodak Carousel projector, but I shot a lot of 25 ASA Kodachrome.
