As a backup camera, I would consider a Canon 1N 35mm film SLR. I picked a low shutter count like new one a couple years ago for around $100. A camera like the 30D isn't going to give you much more than ISO400 anyway.
For a thrash camera, I'd recommend the Canon XTi. Same sensor as the 40D, and it's small and light weight. Coupled with a 40mm pancake lens you can carry it in a coat pocket.
Finding a good (and reasonably priced) film processor is hard these days ... so not sure if going the film route is good option for a casual backup body. Film still has some specific applications where it excels - but for general purpose work, I think it's digital all the way.
Also not to mention getting good film ! You say 30D tops out at ISO 400 -- at ISO 800 it can provide a similar output to typical ISO 800 film printed at the same size with a bit of NR if needed.
Actually your point about the quality of the 30D and film being similar at the same ISO was exactly my point.
As for the cost of film processing, for a back-up camera that's not really an issue. The plan is to not have to use the camera, but, have it there if necessary.
A 35mm film camera would be more comfortable as a backup for a 5D full frame shooter. The lenses they use on their 5D will be the same on the 1N. The photographer will be able to shoot from the same locations, with the same lenses. No, crop sensor field of view change.
As for availability I checked today and it looked like the $100 price point was still available. I shopped awhile for mine, going with one that didn't have a power booster figuring that it probably had less actuations on it.
Plus, if you ever go before Judge Brown, you wont have to worry that your back-up camera wasn't a 1 series camera http://youtu.be/4Lz-07D5KoE
