I'll bet that a 24MP, 8fps $1500 D400 with great AF and great build would outsell the D800 by a lot.

The D400 would just serve so many more needs to so many more people.   24MP is plenty for most people.  The top DX sensor performance is more than most people need.  The faster speed serves all the sports/action markets (where the D800 isn't very good at all).  The less expensive body and lenses means that sooo many more people can afford a a $1500 D400 than a $3000 D800 and so on...  I'll bet it would outsell the D800.
