IIRC, Sony actually makes sensors and Nikon uses Sony sensors in their cameras. One of the advantages that Canon has is that they make pretty much everything that I use, assuming I'm using a Canon lens the only non-Canon thing I'm using is a battery or memory card.

And what that brings with it is optimization and freedom. Canon doesn't have to work with somebody else's technology, they can design their system to best use the things they're making. And to best work with their goals.

That being said Nikon is perfectly good gear, it's just that they don't have that flexibility and also one really doesn't have to stick to OEM parts in all cases to get good results.
