Sure size and design play the biggest role in the E-M5 ergonomics. Function follows form or - hey wait a minute - isn't that the wrong way around? ;)))
Well, fortunately there is a line of cams to mimic the Hexar (which somehow mimics Leica). It is the Fuji line. Yeah! Now they only have to get a grip on their AF, build in a tilting screen, get their lenspark out and ... well, we will see.
Regarding hands on experience and a honest opinion with the Fuji i suggest to contact Kartsten aka kafenio at http://blog.pawlikviewing.com/ (a German only blog). He also knows mFT, used to shoot with Leica, Pentax, Sony NEX 6 and 7, Canon and Nikon and just sold his D3, i.e. has vast experience with different brands and formats.
Regarding the E-M5 ergonomics, this is a difficult toppic because it is a combination of physis (form and size of hands and fingers) and mind set. For some people it just doesn't fit at all, for some it does and most users probably live with the flaws or learn to work around them and concentrate on the advantages.
There is a lot of room for improvement on the E-M5, some of the flaws could be fixed via FW, others are due to the size and design. Imo Oly will address them in a high end OM-D. There is no other explanation for missing access to Mysets, bracketing, ESP+AF metering, AF size setting, optionally moving AF field with the two dials, show AF field in burst mode ... they know how to do this because you find those features are implemented in the E-3/30/5.
Having said that, i still have fun with the E-M5 and i'm using it a lot. But i have small hands with long fingers and operating the dials and buttons is not a real problem for me, even with (thin) gloves.
