Yes but I can imagine people getting upset if the camera decides when to use crop mode, ie all DA lenses operate only in crop mode, because Pentax is not happy with those DA lenses that cover the FF circle but too soft in the corners.

These reasons are probably why Nikon haven't and likely never will release a D300 successor - just use the D600 for the same price in crop mode. Leaving pure APSC for the more affordable entry and mid-level models.
