I'm not a joiner either never have been and yes the distinctions are available to anyone anywhere in the world. Here's a link to the page on the RPS site where you can download the handbook PDF's: http://www.rps.org/distinctions-introduction
They are well worth doing as projects in themselves, concentrating the mind for a number of months on choosing suitable images that fall within the criteria set out in the handbooks.
The subjects don't matter in the least and I believe that's the core value of the distinctions they show that you have achieved a certain standard and you will know that you can apply that standard to everything you do photographically. I thought the best advice I got was, 'play to your strengths' and 'create a body of work'.
