As we age lots of things change. As a kid my mom's side of the family would gather every summer for picnics at the park. Dozens of cousins and aunts and uncles. Took that for granted. Lots of those people aren't around any more. The ones left have scattered. I have a brother visiting this summer from Australia with nephews and a niece I haven't met. Thanks for this reminder. My memory fades faster than the photographs. Since most of us have crossed over from film to digital, there's no excuse. Take several.
I'd like to expand on this - which is a great suggestion of course...
Be sure to take lots of people photos so you have something to remember them by if they 'depart', but also, look for photos of places and things which may not be around much longer.
My town had a smokestack, a huge one that was associated with a large industrial plant that closed. It was a real landmark for many decades. It was eventually knocked down, and there went a piece of my town's history that I didn't photograph in time.
Interesting that this came up in today's local newspaper. A sugar mill processing plant that has towers 200' high was mentioned as being an eyesore because it's sat vacant since 1977. One side wants to tear it down. Others are presenting ideas to save it and make use of it somehow. It's a local landmark since it was built. Should maybe get some documentation of my own. A couple of years ago a grain mill in town caught fire and was later demolished. Too late for that one. The biggest local shopping mall that I helped build and opened in 1984 is slated for demolition to make way for a more modern mall this summer/fall. Another one to capture before it disappears. You know you've been around a while when they start tearing down what you built to make way for the new stuff.
Several years ago I got permission to go onto the roof of my workplace, which is one of the tallest places in town, and I shot photos of the area including many old factory buildings from 100 years ago. Many of them are now gone and I'm glad I have the photos to document how the area used to look.
I wish I could turn the clock back and make use of some opportunities that I passed up. Vantages from rooftops have occurred many times, yet I never used them. Someone at a jobsite I was on said to come up to the roof. We did and saw a tornado form, appear and disappear in the distance, several times. The only one I've seen. We don't get many tornadoes here. One every 10 to 15 years is all. I wish I had a movie of that, even a few shots. But any camera in a carpenter's toolbelt is just asking for trouble.
Look for what is changing, and what may not be around much longer. People and pets, certainly, but also things around your locality which are throwbacks to the past that may not be around forever.
Your post has reminded me to get after it, and not delay too long. Sometimes I wonder what, if anything, will remain of what I've had a hand in building, 50 years from now. Yet, I've heard it said, that's progress. Hmmmm......Mike
