The tradition hotshoe was never designed to hold flashes. Some flashes had to have special knobs to tighten them onto the shoe. And what is your evidence that it was cheaper than the Minolta design? Have you ever used the Minolta one? It was designed specifically to hold flashes, with input from camera guru Herbert Keppler.
