How often do you crop?

Re: mimimum amount

I understand what you're saying and the key phrase here is 'minimum amount necessary.'

Most of my cropping is forced upon me by the restrictions inherent in a 3:2 sensor (or a 4:3). Some shots look great with one aspect ratio but not with another. Other times I need to crop due to paper dimensions and frame considerations. Occasionally - I'll freely admit - I find a small but spectacular feature in an image that just begs to be up-sized and cropped. I can do this with a 36-mP D800E with perhaps too much ease, so I try to discipline myself when shooting to use my glass to the best advantage in the first place.

My point is that cropping is often a necessary compromise and sometimes provides an enhancement to the composition of an image. It should be used judiciously but should not be considered something that is best avoided.

I think my policy is to crop the minimum amount necessary, normally I try to fill the frame but obviously there are situations where is is physically impossible so I crop, there is also the just crop enough to straighten a sloping horizon situation, I do find it difficult to crop an image from 3x2 proportion to fit a 5x4 ratio, it is probably just me but once i have composed ( not wishing to sound pompous here ) an image in the viewfinder I have to see that image in its entirety in the print.
