USB Thumb Drive vs SD Card for photo backup/storage

I teach digital photography and see lots and lots of SD and thumb drives and even during the course of a semester, some become unreadable. I teach my students that SD and USB thumb drives are short term storage solutions. I would not recommend it for the long haul from both a cost and stability angle.
