Yes, the 6D can control the 430ex II (and most flashes) wirelessly (optic)

It can control all of the flashes I'm listing below through it's wireless control (line of site optically).
The 430ex II is an excellent unit. There are basically 2 things you really want to be sure you get - especially if this is going to be your only flash unit. ETTL, and HSS. The ETTL is pretty much self-explanatory, the HSS is something you might not use right away - but as you learn to use your flash in daylight you'll come to appreciate.
There are 3-4 other units you should look at, more or less in the same price category. The Metz 50 AF-1 , The Nissin Di622 , and the Yongnuo YN-565ex and YN-568ex (pretty new). The first 2 are priced a little less than the Canon, the Yongnuo's a lot less. The 2 Yongnuo's are very close to each other in functionality, the 568 having HSS, the 565 having extra plugs for PC port and battery pack but no HSS (technically). The 2 Yongnuo's are also much larger - something to consider. The 565ex for instance is basically a copy-cat of the Canon 580ex II.
Full disclosure, I had a 565ex and it died after 11 months and 8k clicks. Not good - but not terrible. Enough that I don't think I'd get another - and in fact I got a 600ex-rt. This is not my only flash. However, I will possibly consider Yongnuo in the future, I'm sure they're working hard to overcome their spotty QA.
Take a look at those links, and the comparison chart at speedlights.net. If you don't think you're going to ever get into "speedliting", get the Canon and be happy. Do be warned however, it can become addictive! Triggers are great fun, and I highly recommend a set. Besides just being able to remotely trip a flash off camera (which greatly improves quality of shot), you can trigger your camera as well. It's fun to set up your camera on a tripod, and trip it (and your flash) from some other location.
Take a look at a video by one of the guru's of speedlite - Syl Arena . I highly recommend his book too - but not in ebook format!
