True but 2 years ago the lenses are 50 Euro cheaper then new released.today.

I payed 200 Euro for the 16 mm 2 years ago,and now asking 250 Euro for an old lens.

I understand when first release the lens is somewhat costly ,because of the new design.

but two years later the same lens is 50 Euro,s more.

It is hard to believe

the truth is out there.

Hi there,

Does anyone else notice what seems to be going on with the legacy lens prices? About 2 years ago I remember standing in front of shop windows here in Germany full of old film SLRs. You could get e.g. a Canon AE-1, A-1 or T70 or anything similar for 30 - 40 Euros/Pounds/Dollars INCLUDING the obligatory 50 mm f/1.8 or even f/1.4 lens. Even great and once expensive non-AF lenses were under 25 Euros and could often be taken out of large baskets for 5 or 10 Euros each.

Now I thought I would buy a nice Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 as a portrait lens for my new NEX and I was shocked. In the shops nothing under 150 Euros and on Ebay hardly less than 90 Euros. Same for a nice FD macro I was planning to pick up for almost nothing. No chance, the prices are exploding!

Don't deny it, I know who is to blame. It is all you NEX and m4/3 users and it is getting worse all the time.

So could you please all stop buying legacy lenses for a few months until the prices come down again and I can get the bunch of FD lenses I would like for the prices of a year or two ago. Many thanks.

Well you should shop in Belgium.

the kit lens 18-55 350 Euro.local store

I do not know how Sony do it.

but the nex5n cost 540 Euro with the 18-55

so the camera cost hmm 190 Euro.

the viewfinder another 350 Euro but if you buy the 6 for 700 euro then you got the 16-50 lens.

A viewfinder ,a flash.

so the body cost nothing, but the lenses cost an arm.

just like the HP printers 54 Euro for the printer and the ink cost 62 Euro for all colours and black.

I bug-eyed the 16 mm lens 2 years ago it was 199 Euro now 250 Euro.

needless to go mush further.

I think Sony know I wanted an Nex.

It is a bit like how the IBM PC was unleashed on the world. IBM was in a hurry so they didn't bother to patent much of the design. They were sure it wouldn't sell much and even at IBM prices there was little "profit" in it for them. They made personal computers popular because they could not control pricing and clone manufacturers proliferated by selling at realistic pricing.

The same thing in digital cameras. A new mount has few lenses for a time so some manufacturers make it easier for users to mount legacy lenses. This gives these devoted users a great variety of lenses to choose from. However ultimately the manufacturers really want to sell their cheap to make, dear to sell, lenses to a market locked in to their camera mount. The trick is how to make it harder to to mount legacy lenses once that manufacturer has caught up a range of lenses. If they make it too hard these new legacy lens owners are certain to desert that particular brand for another more friendly mount system. If they sell their new purpose built lenses at too high a price they also tend to make ownership of legacy lenses more attractive.

Either the legacy lens prices go up because of demand and the fact that they are no longer made or new cheaper to make lenses come down in price to make them more attractive to buy. My guess is that the business model of the manufacturers is hoping that the former is true.
