Thanks for the report. I did most of my evaluation at F/6.3 - F/9, which tend to be the apertures I like to use on the D800E for landscape or studio work, my main two uses for the lens. I suspected the F/4 was a bit more optimized for distance, and the more I read, the more this seems to be make sense. The 70-200/2.8G VR2 in particular at 105mm or so at close/moderate distances was staggering - beating even my 105/2 DC which in turn beat my 105/2.8G VR that I sold after I got the VR2. The F/4 wasn't in that league (105mm and close/moderate distance). I gotta say though, the lighter weight of the F/4 would be nice for a landscape kit, but for the price, given what else I own, not a good match for me.

100% agree. I use the 70-200 VRII for candids at ranges below 20 feet in most cases. The VRII is unbeaten for this usage.

The F4 has MUCH less focus breathing and that is the only strong point vs. other choices, but in every other respect I'd spend that kind of money on faster glass.

For landscape shooters (who do little else) the F4 makes reasonable sense. I know owners of the F4 don't like to hear it, but I see nothing special about portraits/candids done with it vs. consumer lenses.
