Thanks to all those that responded.

I've adjusted the RAW Fine tuning and it gives a more pleasing result.  The down side is that some other images of non-human subjects (including the one of the ducks on the pond) look a little less vibrant than the Lightroom rendering.

I'm in the process of relocating for work so my internet is a little dodgy and keeps dropping out when I try to upload images - I'll try to upload a few examples this week.

Ultimately I'm still torn between Aperture for its library management and integration with Photostream, and Lighroom which I feel is a better all round image editer.

I think at this stage I'm going to keep using lightroom, and maybe just import selected images into iPhoto or Aperture as DMG for sharing.

Thanks for help!  I'm learning a bit more about RAW...
