AF tune technique without taking photos
3

I developed this technique on a Nikon D800 but just tried it on a 5DM3 and it appears to work as well. I'm interested in others trying it on their bodies with various lenses and seeing how well it works for you. You can read the technique here. You can ignore the part about the digital rangefinder since Canon bodies don't have them. Instead find the AF tune range by starting at opposite ends of the AF tune range (+/- 20) and working your way inward, first in large increments (like +/- 5) and then smaller as you reach the tuning margins. On the 5DM3 you'll know you're at the margins when either the confirmation dot blinks or when it starts to get sluggish, ie taking a little time before lighting up. You'll want to repeat it several times at the margins because it can take several cycles to establish you're just beyond the margin, meaning you may get a few solid green confirmations initially but then it may flicker once or not go on, indicating you're just beyond the margin.
