Whoops!
Sorry SB, I didn't mean to respond to your comment - I wasn't paying attention!
For the OP:
If I were anywhere near Adorama or B&H wild horses couldn't keep me away. That's better than Disneyland! California is pretty far away, unfortunately. I could spend a day in either one of those places.
Anyway, it's quite interesting you ask this - as I was wondering exactly the same thing earlier this evening!
I know that dealing with the local camera shop usually can get me some sort of extra goody if not a direct discount - but they're not on the internet selling incredibly high volume at pretty much regular street price. If the salespeople work on a regular commission type basis it's possible you could get something if you're buying enough gear.
Personally, I don't think I'd expect a whole lot for $700, except maybe throwing in a free bag or memory card or something. But even that's better than a poke in the eye.
I think you do yourself no favors by not going regardless, as you'd gain an education from people who really know their stuff there. As well as possibly seeing or learning about an alternative to what you had planned on buying online; by simply not seeing it online. I know I tend to find a lot more interesting "new" things when I'm actually in a shop and interacting with folks.
