Nikon 70-200 2.8 with a TC2.0 VIII is not very good on my D800

That's right. It's a good combo on the D700 but at the resolution of the D800 it's weak. But unless you're printing large it will look as good or better than you'd get off this combo with a D700 which has made many photographers happy.
