Results are all that matter, it can't be wrong if it works.
I have a 44 inch roll feed printer as well as the 3880, so my use of cut-from-roll paper through the 3880 is limited to not wanting to waste ink on a PK/MK switch. But I have definately had problems with head strikes on Canson 310 rag and other papers of a similar heft on the leading margin when not decurling enough - and also refusal to feed through the rear feed at times.
I can't remember trying mid-weight cut-from-roll photo paper on the 3880. Maybe someone like Irv Weiner can comment on their experiences with this type of paper and decurling needs?
