virus scans reliable?

The last few days, I have read several news items regarding trojans and malware hidden in erroneous e-mails and their links. I have opened a couple of these and so do not know if I unknowingly installed something. I downloaded latest sophos (anti-virus) and scanned drive which does not show anything. I'm wondering if this scan is enough. OS10.7.5
Is this a separate yahoo e-mail thing or mac thing?
