In principle yes. Together with the L-plate on the camera you can use the preferred portrait orientation of the camera to obtain a better vertical field of view.

I can't determine if the base slide plate would definitely be out of view of lens below the camera?

I cannot determine this either, since I would need the exact dimensions of all included plates including the L-bracket. And even then there could be some uncertainty if it is very close...
