Late afternoon, or early morning, indirectlight on clear (or only partly cloudy can be even better, due to blue skies plus some nice diffusion) days is what works for me with green plants and flowers. That my approach ...

First-reflection sunlight? Is that a term of art or do you just mean direct sunlight bouncing off the subject?

It's just a phrase that I read somewhere that sounded impressive, and that I commonly like to repeat with a deeply resonant stoic gravity so that nobody might guess that I am in reality a witless blowhard who just pretends to know many things that, in fact, I borrow from other people who I try to cleverly coerce into doing my thinking and reasoning for me so that I might appear intelligent - like some erudite master of academic ceremonies who in reality has a rather flaccid intellect - but is nevertheless fond of sticking his boring and rather droll proboscis into other people's affairs ...

Self awareness is profoundly important. Know thyself!

Perhaps interestingly, the first google hits for the phrase "first-reflection sunlight" are posts by you. https://www.google.com/search?q=%22first-reflection+sunlight%22 For example, the first hit is http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/38591711

The best light for many types of photography is usually around sunrise, sunset or when the sun is diffused by clouds.
