Any tips for a Spring Break Grand Canyon Trip?

I going on a 3 day hike into the Grand Canyon. I will be taking the South Kaibab trail down and the Bright Angel trail out. I plan on taking my T2i (550D) with the kit lens and my new 50mm 1.8 lens. Does anyone have tips on shooting in the canyon both day and night (astrophotography)?
