It's a great camera, but all cameras are so complex now there's always the possibility that some combination of factors will conspire to cause a strange effect, but the odds of it happening are remote. If it's not happening frequently then I would say it's nothing to worry about.

As for the smearing effect, you are unlikely to notice this unless you process RAW files with ACR, though it's a good idea to stick to neutral film emulation modes like Pro Neg Std. Velvia sometimes causes a bit of colour bleed in bright reds depending on background.
