You know, it's not that hard to have a look at some of the threads that Dan has started, and read some of his posts, and see that he is not a troll or a jerk or a complete fool, and that he is rather polite and soft-spoken. In this post, he provides some historical background about himself:

The boorish attitudes expressed towards the OP, apparently without taking the slightest interest in them except as a potential whipping post, that I see a lot of respondents full and brimming over with would be a discouraging experience for any reasonable person asking a question. Like some sadists parlor. Sounds (mostly) like a lot of people chocked full of themselves. A pretty weird form of "help".
