How to improve (handheld) sweep panorama technique? Always getting jagged horizon with Nex-5
Feb 2, 2013

Hi,

No matter how steady I hold the camera and how closely I try to maintain a straight consistent line with the horizon, I seem to get jagged edges on the horizon (where the images are stitched).

It always seems to be when shooting panoramas with a straight horizon (e.g. beach).

Is stitching a panorama with a straight line horizon like this too much for the stitching algorithm, or there something I can do to improve my technique...

A few suggestions I've read in the forums are:

  • twist from the hip, don't sweep the arms
  • rotate the camera on a vertical axis running through the camera, rather than sweep.
  • don't hold shutter button down, just click and sweep
What have you found works well? Is there a focal length that works better? I've usually got it set wide (18mm).
Looking forward to hearing your suggestions.Prembo.
