I'm looking to upgrade from my D40, considering either D90 or D5100. Compared a D5100 and a D7000 at BestBuy today (they didn't have a D90). The finder on the 7000 seemed so much bigger and brighter, it made the 5100 feel like a toy by comparison. Does the D90 finder look about the same as that of the 7000? Haven't had a chance to try one yet.

they both have penta prism finders so they should have similar viewfinders, i own both a d90 and a d7000 and i hardly notice the difference. The d7000 finder looks clean though because it is not cluttered with AF points, the AF points only light up during focus lock on. Where the D90 focus points show on the viewfinder all the time. I suggest go for the D7000. IQ and almost everything else is far better.

You mean the D90's focus points light up any time you have the shutter pressed half-way? Or do they light up any time the camera's turned on?

D90's focus point only briefly lights up ( the one you selected) when you press the shutter halfway, but you can always see all 11 of them on the VF, ( as black small rectangles) while the D7000 VF is clean, no AF points. you will only see one when you select one. hope this helps.
