If you are shooting with a lens that doesn't have focus shifting (slight change of focus with aperture setting due to uncorrected spherical aberration), it's better to focus wide open, with focus peaking, as the DOF is shallower and the in-focus range is narrower. Then step down.

In you have a Super Takumar, this is easy using the Auto/Man switch on the lens.

Also I find with FP that when you zoom in you can see surface imperfections/features flashing, as well as the edges. And I find these internal/surface flashes easier to work with than the edges.
