Daniel - We'll just have to agree to disagree. On a D800, if you can see more sharpness..

D800 would magnify those flaws. Hence the thought that you should use good to excellent lens with a D800.

Only at the pixel peeping level...but you have to remember the D800 puts more pixels into the same area.

The point is, sized the same, the D800 will NEVER be less sharp on ANY lens. It will always be immeasurably better, or measurably better...depending on the sharpness of the lens it sits behind. The sharper the lens, the more the difference. Of course, it isn't just related to lens sharpness, camera shake and DOF will have to be tended to, if you want to get the full potential out of the D800.

from a less than stellar lens then you shouldn't have to pixel peep to see the lens' flaws, e.g., a lack of corner to corner sharpness.

I was surprised at the measured difference between the Canon combo and the D800 combos.  I wonder if you could really see much difference in 8x10 prints since this is all top notch equipment.

Finally, I fully agree with you that test results are one thing and using the D800 in every day shooting is a different proposition.  Good technique is a must to get the best results from the D800/lens combination you are using.
