Well now we all know for sure. ETTL does not compensate for a diffuser/modifier. That did not surprise me. Gotta compensate for the bounce as well. Even if it pointed forward and no diffuser is used you need to compensate for whatever the pre-flash reflects if you want to hit the sweet spot and that often requires some FEC. Distance information is just a verification but the pre-flash reflectance is the boss.

I read multiple forums and when the question is asked it seems like half of the replies are yes it does compensate.

I guess if distance info was the priority it would have to be focus point orientated. ETTL II metering went away from that so you can focus and recompose without affecting exposure.
