That may be sloppy terminology too. Sensor read noise does not change at different gains (except perhaps in Aptiva variable sensitivity sensors) , but the contribution of ADC noise to the total RN can be affected by analogue gain in the PGA.

I think recent Exmor "sensors" have tightly integrated PGA & ADC stages "on-chip". What should these devices be called? Sensors? Sensor systems? Imaging systems?

I suppose it comes down to what you class as a sensor these days, with assemblies replacing individual components.

I have always used "sensor" to mean "sensor and supporting hardware", but I suppose I should spell it out each time.

Sensor, supporting hardware and digital signal processing.

How about SSHDSP for short?

In any case, all of that electronics is distributed around the body of the camera, it wouldn't be simply a case of slotting in a new rectangular block.
