You can leave the camera in manual focus and it will stay in that mode. Is that your question?

At f4-5.6, it's possible because the dof is quite large. Wider than f2.8 and for focal length longer than 20mm, it's pretty hard and I have experienced lots of misses. At f1.8 or wider and focal length > 20mm, forget it.
