What are your thoughts on the Nikon D3200 for someone who is just getting into photography?

I've been a serious amateur for 45 years and I use a D3100 because I like small lightweight cameras and it has excellent image quality, better even than my D90. It lacks many of the features of higher end models, but I don't need them. Unless you have some special need, you may not need them either. When I outgrow my D3100, I'll let you know.

I would consider my needs, and unless you need something the D3200 lacks like a high burst rate, it should be a good choice. That said, with the D5200 coming out, the D5100 has come down so much in price that I think it is a better choice than the D3200. It has exposure bracketing and an articulated LCD screen that the D3200 lacks. It has fewer MP's, but it has more than enough. In the end, you wouldn't go wrong with either one.
