If you're a tourist, you can take the risk if you want to as it is insured and at the end of the day you could replace it quickly enough in Hawaii at relatively modest cost (at least enough to be going on with until you get home)
I never check my gear in as they are tools of my trade and I cannot work without them. It's not uncommon to be carrying $25,000 worth of gear in my bag so I could not simply pop to a nearby camera shop after getting that much out of the ATM - I would have to wait for the insurance. Meanwhile, my client has hired someone else....
Nope. I never check in my gear.
