I suspect that attitude may be the result of either not having used lenses which weren't sharp or of using older dSLRs where they weren't really testing the resolving power of the lens.

That would definitely be me. I've got the Canon 70-200mm F2.8L IS, Tamron 28-75 F2.8 Di and Canon 50mm F1.8 mkII and they're all well respected as far as sharpness goes, the only other lens I've used was for my Dad's Yashica, and IIRC, that 50mm has a pretty good reputation as well.

I've just gotten a 7D, so unlike with my old 10D, I may very well see if the lenses I have are as sharp as I think they are. I haven't personally had any problems with that, but I'm now using a body with 3x the photosites which means that sharpness and resolving power are going to be much more importance.
