Is the 17/1.8 snap-focus ring a gimmick?

Look at any legacy lens.

As the focal lengt gets longer, the markings on the aperture scale get closer together.

It can not be avoided.

It cannot be avoided on legacy glass, but we are talking about focus-by-wire here. Surely it is a simple matter of changing algorithms so that the snap-ring moves further in relation to the focusing element?

I don't know enough about how the "snap ring" actually works to say.  I understand that it has mechanical stops so I am not sure how that effects the elecrical "helicoid" that the ring must traverse.


Oly would have been better off making this thing plastic, like the superior 45/1.8, and selling it for $350.

Well, if you don't want access to zone focus and setting the hyper-focal distance that would be true.
