What with the micro dslr style EM5 becoming the backup camera of choice for dedicated amateurs and even some pros, it makes sense to provide the same package with the option of fast AF with the larger, faster, and optically excellent ZD lenses. They could end up selling quite a few ZD's.

Given the results that Panasonic got when trying for seriously compacted high grade lenses, it would appear that Olympus decided not to compromise their optical standards, and fixed the AF situation instead.

I honestly believe that the greatest obstacle that the majority of 4/3 owners face with such an arrangement is perception.
