A couple things, based on some or all of the responses so far:

-VR is great.  Just remember it's not going to help with subject motion.

-Contrary to what's being said, the histogram is virtually useless.  It's based on the jpeg content embedded in the RAW file (if you're shooting RAW), but more importantly, the highs and lows are often bunched up at each end, so you're not getting good info there.  Better to use the blinky display.  BUT...

-If you don't want to worry about exposure EVER, spot meter off the brightest thing in the frame (that you need to retain detail in), and set your exposure 2 stops brighter (as compared to the center of the meter).  This can be done several ways, and will ensure you keep the highlight detail that you need.
