A Red Rose

About three years ago, Sandra put in a red rose near the fish pond in honour of her dad (he is no longer with us since ten years ago).

It usually brings up two blooms, one after the other. Last evening the sky was clear, but the rose bloom that budded two days earlier was already in shadow -

I used WB CLOUD at EV -2, because camera sensors see red as very dark, so the firmware gets it wrong.

Fixing the White Balance also stops the firmware from trying to balance out that colour when it is dominating the picture area.

The BSI CMOS sensor in the SZ-30MR does retain more of the saturation than the CCDs in my older cameras do, but no reproductive equipment or technique is perfect. Today we have an overcast sky, so I took another shot of that rose at midday.

Again, I set WB CLOUD and EV -2.

Processing consisted of making highlights brighter and midtones darker in PSE7 'Levels', and I also increased the contrast. Hardly any colour variation was needed.

But I still cannot reproduce that velvety appearance that the original roses get.
