If you want small get the RX 100. There is nothing much IQ wise, you will gain with NEX + 1650 PZ in comparison to RX 100.

You may be right if the only lens a person owns is the 16-50 kit lens. Don't have the lens so I can't comment on its quality.

Just the same, there's no fair comparison between an NEX and the RX100.

Picture quality from the NEX cameras is much better and even the Canon G1X has better IQ than the RX100.

The RX100 is a good compact camera but it still has a small sensor (when compared to APS) and just isn't in the same category.

Here's what dpreview has to say about the RX100:

"That doesn't mean the RX100 is going to replace your DSLR or large sensor mirrorless camera - it just can't compete with the image quality or flexibility that their sensors and interchangeable lenses bring. Meanwhile the poor dial implementation means it's probably not a camera to fall in love with - there are a few too many obvious improvements that could be made, but it is still a camera that deserves a lot of respect."

OP said that size matters to him, and I was referring to that.

RX100 vs NEX + 1650 PZ is about priorities, but while RX100 has clear advantage in size and shape, NEX with 1650 does not have such a big advantage in resulting IQ for most purposes.

Of course there is slightly shallower DOF and 1-2 stop better High ISO performance. That's about it. Both cameras use extensive lens software corrections, so neither combination is best choice for large prints.

If the OP want more lens options in the future, then NEX is obvious choice.
But in that case, I wouldn't cry for 1650. NEX with 1650 is still just jacket pocket camera, and I am usually able to fit my NEX 5n with 50 f1.8 SEL (similar to 18-55 in size) to my jacket pocket too. Not a big deal IMO.

Such a F3 with 18-55 is probably the best value now-days.
