I do know the "pros" specifically take 3 or 5 exposures normally 1 stop apart and merge these images first before adding P/P in either of the programs mentioned.

No you are right, the 3 - 5 exposures should be done with bracketing the shot in camera, I have taken several this way, but after the event of just one shot I have pulled some kind of HDR effect in LR using a RAW file and playing with the exposures, certainty not the ideal way to go was just a sugestion of an option to play with
