It does become a 550 effective f2.8 (at least in light gathering if not depth of field) lens. However,
I think you need to stop down a little to get the best from it. Also, the manual focus is very touchy, small movements make a big difference in the focus. It would be a lot better with a focusing aid like an lcd hood and a tripod. It's not impossible just more difficult without. I'm waiting for my clear viewer viewfinder to turn up. It will keep the form factor a little smaller than a hood. But it always helps if the subject is stationary
