In PhotoShop I convert the image into Lab mode so that I can dodge and burn the L channel only. That way dodging and burning don't affect color saturation.

Is there a way to achieve the same results in Elements 10 (which can't convert to Lab mode)?

Thanks, gordo

Try this

Another option could simply be to dodge and burn on a duplicate layer with blending mode set to "luminosity".
