I have a G1 and a 5D. I don't know what DR each is capable of capturing but in practice in the often relatively poor light of northern England my G1 is actually the easier camera to shoot with due to the in view histogram. The shadows may need to be boosted a little post capture but within reason this often isn't an issue.

With the 5D of course there is no in view histogram and sometimes I really have to either take a shot, review it and dial in compensation as appropriate, or take a guess and meter and then dial in compensation before shooting.

If/when I buy a CSC with a greater DR I expect to have even fewer issues capturing wide DR scenes

A little example, this was captured with one shot with my G1 but with my 5D it would have been a little more difficult. There are no blown highlights and it's a very natural looking result
