The image was taken january 5th from Norway - and we use EMT (European mean time, one hour east of the greenwich meridian - that is: UT - 1 hour standard time).
The open cluster is NGC 1746 (6.1 mag).
I use a lot of sources to find celestial objects. For comets try the SkyHound site (the mastermind behind SkyTools, which I also use). I also use TheSky.
Periodicals like Sky&Telescope, Astronomy, Sterne und Weltraum, Astronomy Now and a lot others bring fresh news from space, including new comets.
At this moment comet linear is faint and very far in the southern sky - but two new comets look very promising this year. Will post alerts on this forum in advance. Usually quite a few faint comets are visible every night, but they can only be seen as rather faint specs in moderate or big telescopes.
Thanks for your reply and image information. Now what my SkySafari app shows on that date & time matches exactly what your image shows. My guess of January 1st was when the comet was on the other side of Beta Aurigae near another open cluster. By the way, according to the app, your image shows stars at least as faint as magnitude 14.5. What telescope (or lens) did you use?
I've noticed that a lot of images taken with camera lenses reach down to about 10th magnitude. In any case your images are some of the best. Thanks for sharing.
