Definitely turn servo off.

And definitely use the "Framing Assist Lock" button on the lens barrel. Keep the camera in Single Shot stabilization, and kick in the Stabilization as needed with the button.

Always half press and give the camera time to focus.

Remember, minimum focus distances are different in different modes...Sports only focuses to ~40 feet at the long end of the zoom in Sports.
