I have a 2005 Imac G5 20"ALS that having problems starting up. It now takes 3-4 tries with a hard shutdown to get it going. First, it may be a blank grey screen, then only a grey apple and the fan goes into high gear, or grey apple and spinning dashes (i.e. not the pinwheel).
So, Is my hard drive cr@pping out, or maybe electrical capacitors gone bad?
Thanks for your ideas.

It is serious problem with your Mac. You should check whether boot drive is working or not.
Hold the Command and r keys down while booting the machine (or the Option key), you should either enter Recovery HD or (with option key) Startup Manager to be able to select Recovery to boot from.
Let me know if it is working fine or not.
