Lens manufacturers.
Call one and ask them if while under warranty, they cover damages to a lens because the hood didn't stay on or protect it enough.

You say that they 'are' for flare, period. However, they 'are' for lens protection as well. How can I say that factually? Simple, because I've used them for that purpose. Therefore, definitionally, they 'are' for that as well. Whether a lens manufacturer will acknowledge that and open themselves up to more damage claims is not relevant to what something 'is'.
In that case they 'are' for picking up dog poop too.
I guess the manufacturers will replace mine if it breaks in the process, then.

Still doesn't change the fact that they are not made for that, and thus the OP is whining for nothing and the person you were trying to correct.... is still correct.
