I have done a google search with D40 and 16-85 and can't find anything bar this thread... will go through it all and see if I can find anything else.

I started this thread over 3 years ago, and at that time I remember participating in several other discussions on this issue. I can't remember them now, but if you search for my name you may find at least some of mine. I seem to recall that there were several threads involving the D90 with this lens, so not just the D40.

Here is one thread I did find and it is comparing the 18-105 to the 16-85 including some sample pics of each.

At that time I felt the same as you in that most everyone else (especially professional reviews) were saying how great the 16-85 was, so why was I having such a different experience? This drove me to learn all about the Nikon AF algorithms and also how to adjust the camera. I could get my best 16-85 copy pretty darn sharp with AF adjustments in mt D40, but it still had inconsistencies from shot to shot, and across the field of view. I sold it last year and purchased the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 and I have been much happier. The lens is even sharper than the 16-85 at it's best, and the D40 AF seems to perform much more accurately on it.

This is the 17-50 if interested
