I agree, vibration reduction is a great benefit to getting sharper photos. I was able to take shots at lower ISO, hand held, with the 24-85 VR, than I was with an F2.8 lens, because of the VR. People who think it isn't an advantage on shorter focal length lenses haven't used it. Once you do, it is hard to go back to a lens without it. I really wish someone would come out with an 85mm fast prime with it.
VR is a big deal. Nikon 24-70 owners say NO because they don't have it. But the Tamron is PRACTICAL terms is the optical equal of the Nikon 24-70 for things like wedding work, but with VC you get a lens than can shoot available light static/landscape/indoor/street at shutter speeds the Nikon cannot do. Oh, and let's not forget that the Tamron basically murders the Nikon for video work.
If I was buying rebuying this focal length in a pro fast lens I could not pick the Nikon. The Tamron is not really the budget pick. It's a more versatile lens period.
BUT...and it's a big one....I'm shooting my small, lightweight 24-85vr "kit" lens more happily than I ever did the Nikon 24-70 2.8, so there's a lot to be said lenses that pack a lot into small packages. The Nikon and Tamron are BIG!
